Ipswich boards launch design standards initiative

Historical Commission · Meeting of March 25, 2026

Ipswich boards launch joint effort for downtown design standards. The Planning Board, Design Review Board, Historical Commission, and 3A Task Force convened jointly to develop new illustrated design guidelines for downtown's 3A/MBTA district. Planning Director Alan Manoian and Assistant Town Planner Brianna Kelly outlined goals to replace current text-based standards with illustrated visuals for developers.

The boards reviewed the 2021 Community Development Plan's Smart Housing and Vibrant Town Center initiatives, citing examples from Newburyport and Portland. Discussion addressed balancing development with historic character preservation, and mobile workshops are planned as next steps.
