Ipswich outlines safe ways to dispose of used needles
The Town of Ipswich's Public Health Department announced several options for residents to safely dispose of used needles and sharps, including a drop-off kiosk at Town Hall.
The Town of Ipswich announced Oct. 16 several safe disposal options for used needles and other sharps, citing the health and injury risks improper disposal can pose to people, pets and sanitation workers.
The Public Health Department operates a sharps disposal kiosk on the lower level of Town Hall, outside the Council on Aging cafeteria. Free personal sharps containers that fit through the kiosk door are available there.
Residents can also use mail-back programs, in which used sharps are placed in special containers and mailed, in accordance with U.S. Postal Service requirements, to a collection site for disposal. These programs are available for individual use.
For people who use needles, a syringe exchange program allows used needles to be exchanged for new ones. The service is provided locally by North Shore Health Project/ONESTOP, which can be reached by calling or texting a confidential line at 978-949-2800.
The town also noted that home needle destruction devices are available on the market. These products clip, melt or burn needles so they can be safely thrown in the garbage, reducing the chance that sharps end up in the waste stream.
The announcement said improperly discarded needles can injure people and pets in homes, as well as housekeeping and janitorial staff, and can rupture in trash compactors or landfill machinery, endangering sanitation workers. Anyone exposed to a used needle must be treated as if it carried a disease, leading to medical testing and related costs.
