School Committee tables pump station land use vote
Ipswich School Committee stalls on land dispute over $15 million pump station.
School Committee · Meeting of September 17, 2026
Ipswich School Committee stalls on land dispute over $15 million pump station. Water and Wastewater Director Vicki Hellman told the board the town's flood-prone wharf pump station needs relocating to Town Hall fields using FEMA grant money, but Chair Jennifer Donahue and a committee attorney said the school board, not the town, legally controls that land, citing a 1926 town meeting vote. "I'm not comfortable voting on an easement that leads to land that we have been told is under our control," Donahue said.
Town Manager Brendan Sweeney and Select Board Chair Mike Daugherty both pledged to open dialogue before the Oct. 20 special town meeting takes up the related Article 9 easement. The board took no vote on the article but unanimously approved a policy change dropping School Committee approval of athletic co-ops, 2026-27 committee goals, and two overnight field trips at $415 and $1,195 per student.
