IPSWICH — The Ipswich School Committee voted unanimously to approve a $41,467,490 budget for fiscal 2027, restoring a Winthrop School counselor, an elementary PE teacher and expanding high school math staffing. Members also voted to steer $390,000 from the Feoffees trust toward "ongoing instructional enrichment." Chair Dianna Freehan oversaw nearly five hours of debate after an earlier $41,879,911 proposal drew pushback over student-facing cuts. A finance staffer told the board a 10 percent health insurance cost drop, rather than the 20 percent originally budgeted, freed about $190,000, letting the district cut its stabilization-fund draw to $1,185,295 from a projected $1.6 million.
Principal John Mitchell objected that a math-teacher cut was never flagged publicly: "No one came to me. No one asked about math." Member Paul said, "We keep finding money," questioning repeated late-stage budget shifts.
